It has been a decade since the Bakumatsu era, a time of conflict that witnessed the uprising of citizens against the oppressive Tokugawa shogunate. The revolutionaries aimed to establish a peaceful and prosperous country. While the new Meiji era has dawned, true peace remains elusive. Despite the ban on swords, senseless killings still plague the streets. War veterans' orphans find themselves abandoned, while the government appears focused on self-enrichment.

Amidst this backdrop, a wandering samurai named Kenshin Himura continues his quest to ensure that the ideals he fought for are worth the sacrifices made to usher in the new era. Once feared as the ruthless assassin Hitokiri Battousai, Kenshin is haunted by guilt and has vowed never to kill again, seeking redemption for the lives he took. However, true peace eludes him as long as violence persists.

In the 11th year of Meiji, Kenshin crosses paths with Kaoru Kamiya, the owner and chief instructor of a modest dojo on the brink of closure. The police are powerless against the series of murders committed in the name of her dojo, perpetrated by an individual claiming to be the infamous Battousai. Kenshin's wandering journey temporarily halts as he joins forces with Kaoru to clear their names. But the question remains: How long can he stay before his shadowed past catches up to him?
